Concrete, dirt, rock, and fill material cannot go in our dumpsters. Not a little, not mixed in with other debris, not "just the one busted birdbath's worth of chunks." It's one of the few hard rules at Dandy Ridge Dumpsters, and since it surprises people planning patio teardowns and grading projects around Jefferson County, it deserves a full explanation.
Why can't concrete go in a roll-off dumpster?
Weight, plain and simple. Concrete and dirt are so dense that even a partial load hits the truck's legal weight limit. A 20-yard dumpster full of household junk is an easy haul. The same dumpster a quarter full of broken slab is a truck that can't legally leave your driveway. It isn't about the landfill, it's about the truck, so this is one where Jason can't make an exception no matter how nicely you ask. The same goes for rock, gravel, sand, and fill dirt.
What should you do with concrete and dirt instead?
Set it aside and give us a call, and we'll point you the right way. Where a load of concrete should go depends on what it is and how much of it you've got, and we'd rather talk it through than have you guess. What we ask is that it never goes in the dumpster, because we can't haul it once it's in there, and digging a layer of concrete chunks back out of a half-loaded dumpster is nobody's idea of a good afternoon.
What heavy debris can go in the dumpster?
Plenty. Roofing shingles, old tile, plaster, and dense remodel debris are all accepted, they just take planning because every rental includes up to 1 ton of weight. Shingles run roughly 250 pounds per square, so a tear-off can hit the included ton around 8 squares; our shingle weight calculator will give you a number for your roof before you book. What does a heavy load cost?
The first ton is included in every rental, and past that you pay by the exact scale weight. Overage runs $85 per ton in Jefferson, Hamblen, and Cocke County, and $125 per ton farther out in Sevierville, Knoxville, Kodak, and Seymour. We never round up, and the landfill's scale ticket goes out with your invoice so you can check the math. Base rates are on the pricing page: $375 for a 3-day 20-yard, $475 for 7 days.
How do you plan a heavy job right?
Tell us what the debris is when you book. Jason answers the phone himself, and "gutted bathroom with a tile floor" or "30 squares of shingles" is all he needs to tell you what to expect on weight.
