Shingle weight & dumpster calculator.

Roofing shingles are heavier than they look, and weight is what fills a dumpster on a tear-off. Plug in your roof and we'll estimate the tear-off weight and point you to the right size. It's an estimate to plan with, not an exact quote.

Why shingle weight decides everything.

On a roofing job, weight fills the dumpster before space does. Standard 3-tab shingles run about 250 lbs per square (a square is 100 sq ft of roof), architectural shingles about 325 lbs. A typical 20-square single-layer tear-off is around 2.5 to 3 tons. Every rental includes one ton, so on most roofs the overage is part of your real cost, and it's better to know that number before the job than after.

Overage is $85 per ton in Jefferson, Hamblen, and Cocke County ($125 farther out), billed off the actual landfill scale ticket. Exact weight, never rounded. The full breakdown is on our pricing page.

Two layers changes the math

Tearing off two layers doubles the weight but not the volume. That's the classic mistake: renting for space when the scale is what gets you. If the calculator says you're well past 3 tons, tell Jason when you book. Sometimes splitting into a swap mid-job beats stuffing one box past what the truck can safely haul. Our roofing dumpster guide walks through sizing a tear-off step by step.
