On a roofing job, weight fills the dumpster before space does. Standard 3-tab shingles run about 250 lbs per square (a square is 100 sq ft of roof), architectural shingles about 325 lbs. A typical 20-square single-layer tear-off is around 2.5 to 3 tons. Every rental includes one ton, so on most roofs the overage is part of your real cost, and it's better to know that number before the job than after.

Tearing off two layers doubles the weight but not the volume. That's the classic mistake: renting for space when the scale is what gets you.
