What size dumpster fits deck boards?
The 20-yard is 15 feet long and 8 feet wide, so most deck boards and joists lie flat in the bottom instead of poking out at angles. That matters more with lumber than with any other debris, because a pile of boards tossed in crosswise fills a dumpster with air. Lay the long pieces flat and stack as you go and you'll fit a surprising amount of deck in there. The walls are 4.25 feet, low enough to load boards over without heaving them above your head.
Can old deck lumber go in the dumpster?
Yes, all of it. Deck boards, joists, posts, railings, and stairs are standard construction debris, and boards with nails and screws still in them are fine, that's what demo debris looks like. The one thing to pull off the pile is anything that isn't wood or hardware. What about the concrete footings?
They can't go in the dumpster. We don't take concrete, dirt, or rock in any of our dumpsters, because even a small amount of it puts the truck over its legal weight limit. Same goes for the dirt that comes up with them.
Will a deck teardown go over the weight limit?
Most don't, but a big deck can. Every rental includes up to 1 ton of weight, 2,000 pounds. Lumber is heavier than cleanout junk but lighter than shingles or tile, so a modest deck usually rides under the limit. If yours goes over, the overage is billed from the exact scale weight, $85 per ton in Jefferson, Hamblen, and Cocke County and $125 per ton farther out, and the scale ticket comes with your invoice. The 3-day 20-yard at $375 suits a deck job well. Demo goes fast once you get a rhythm, and unlike a remodel there's nothing to wait on afterward. If you'd rather work at it over two weekends, the 7-day is $475, and extra days are $50 each whenever a project runs long.
