A garage cleanout is one of those jobs most folks put off, sometimes for years. It's easy to let the garage become a catch-all, a place where things go to be forgotten. Before you know it, you can't even park your car in there, let alone find that tool you know you have somewhere. But tackling it doesn't have to be a nightmare. With a little planning and the right help, you can get your garage back without losing your mind. (The garage is #1 on our list of projects that go easier with a dumpster.)
Why garages get out of hand
It starts innocently enough. A few boxes from a move, some old sports gear, a broken lawnmower you swear you'll fix someday. For folks around Jefferson County and towns like Morristown or Jefferson City, garages often hold everything from fishing tackle and boat parts for Douglas Lake to workshop tools and project materials. Before you know it, what was once a usable space is a maze of forgotten treasures and outright junk. The good news is, you can turn it around.
A simple plan to get your garage back
You don't need a fancy system, just a straightforward approach.
1. Set aside a weekend (or two half-days). This isn't a quick job. Give yourself enough time so you don't feel rushed and quit halfway through. A Saturday and Sunday, or two solid mornings, works best.
2. Pull everything out. This is the most important step. Empty the whole garage. Every box, every tool, every piece of lumber. Lay it all out in the driveway or yard. It'll look worse before it looks better, but this lets you see everything you own and makes sorting much easier.
3. Sort into piles. As you pull things out, start three piles: Keep (things you use and things in good shape), Donate or sell (still good, but you don't use it), and Toss (broken, beyond repair, true junk). That last pile is where a dumpster earns its keep.
4. Work in zones as you put things back. Once you've sorted, start putting the Keep pile back. Don't just throw it in. Set up zones: a tool area, a sports-gear area, a shelf for seasonal stuff. Shelves, bins, and hooks make the garage work for you.
What to do with all that junk
You've got a big Toss pile now. You could make a dozen trips to the dump, or you could make it easy on yourself.
Rent a dumpster. For most garage cleanouts, a 15-yard dumpster is usually perfect. We rent a 15-yard box for $450 for 7 days. That lets you toss as you go, right into the box, instead of piling it up and loading it all again for a dump run. It saves you time, gas, and a lot of backache. Every rental includes pickup and disposal of up to 1 ton.
Curbside pickup. If your Toss pile isn't huge, maybe just one good-sized stack, our curbside pickup might be the better fit. For $240 we come by and grab that single pile.
What you can and can't toss
Most common garage junk is fine: broken tools, busted furniture, cardboard, old sports gear, scrap wood, and general household trash. A couple of things to watch:
Paint. If you've got old paint cans, make sure the paint is fully dry before tossing them (cat litter or sand mixed in will do it). Wet, liquid paint is prohibited.
Tires. Worn tires can be a pain to get rid of. Give us a call first if you've got tires, sometimes we can take them, but we need to check.

Picking the right size
For most garage cleanouts, the 15-yard is the sweet spot. Big enough to handle years of accumulation, not so big it hogs your whole driveway for a week. We aim for same-day or next-day delivery whenever we can, drop it where you want it, and pick it up when you're done.
